The change of the seasons
When Lord Mitsukuni, the second lord of Mito Tokugawa clan, resigned his prosperous office in the shogunate government, he spent his last ten years in both the serenity and severity of Seizan.
Spring After Lord Mitsukuni's favorite plum begins to blossom, wild birds start to twitter and fresh leaves begin to sprout.
Fresh green mosses, wisteria, iris and many more plants too numerous to mention are in bloom just as they have from ages past.
The Lord must have felt a great peace of mind when seeing this verdancy.
Summer The deep green forest echoes the past.
In a continuous chorus of cicadas, a gentle breeze through the grove must have given Lord Mitsukuni some coolness, and it still blows throughout the villa of Seizan.
Autumn In Seizan-so, red dragonflies are flitting during autumn.
Between the middle of November and early December, the whole mountainside is ablaze with scarlet-tinged leaves. Think of Lord Mitsukuni composing a poem inspired by this sight.
Winter The Old plum trees and camellias, which Lord Mitsukuni loved, still exist and bloom quietly, during the intense cold. A few times a year, you can see snowy Seizan-so, which is beyond description.
